First Recipient of the Linda J. Miller Scholarship Award

Picture
The first Linda J. Miller Scholarship Award was presented on April 17th at the Augusta Area High School High Tech Awards Luncheon to Jared.  This young man consistently maintains a very high grade point average and in his junior year, he was ranked #1 in a class of 153 students.  He is  involved in many clubs at school such as the Chess Club, Marching Band & Concert Band,  4-H Skeet Shooting Team, Student Council, Science Club, Beta Club, and  National Honors Society.  He has been an officer in most of these clubs. He is also involved in the community in Youth Ministries, Vacation Bible School Student Leader, Men’s Ministry Cooking Team Member and has volunteered the past 2 years as junior firefighter at the McDuffie County Fire Department so he can gain experience in his career interest.  He has also received many honors in school and just to name a few of them: Highest grade point average in English, Accelerated Math-I, Biology and AP United States Government as a freshman, US Achievement Academy, National Science Award and National Mathematics Award as a sophomore; Selected State Level of the Governor’s Honors Program and participated in a month long program at Valdosta State University as a junior; and AP scholar award as a senior. And trust me, this is just a few of the many awards this young man has received in high school.   He is planning to attend Kennesaw State University with a major in Chemistry/Forensics and his career goal is to be a Fire/Arson Investigator.  With this young man’s grade point average at school in spite of challenges, his many recognitions and awards, his willingness to volunteer his time, and his determination, we have no doubt that he will be successful in post-secondary education and his career.

History of the Linda J. Miller Scholarship Award:

Lee Miller, started the Georgia Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities in 1997 after her daughter, Linda, had an accident and sustained a severe traumatic brain injury.  Lee thought there needed to be additional resources for students with disabilities to encourage them to pursue careers and live independently - she initiated the Georgia High School High Tech Program.  Lee’s daughter, Linda lived a full, successful and independent life for many years after her injury and passed away in 2013.  It was Linda’s wish that a scholarship fund be started in her name to continue to assist students with disabilities to reach their career goals and full potential.  This scholarship is supported by private donations. 2014 is our first year to present the Linda J. Miller Scholarship award.

If you would like to donate to this scholarship fund, please send your checks to the Georgia Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities, P. O. Box 1090, Fortston, GA  31808 and let us know it is for the scholarship fund.
